As the world continues to engage in the conversation on social justice, with gender justice and economic justice at the forefront, Viola Davis once again uses art and entertainment as a tool for driving home the message. In her movie G20, she encapsulates the interconnectedness of politics, community, and the economy. This movie gives a critical perspective to the controversial issue of having a woman head the most powerful office in the world: that of the President of the United States of America.

This movie explores diverse narratives around social justice, especially as it relates to the role of girls and women in society and the world at large. It subtly also proposes that for whatever reason the world should be at the brink of destruction, women will be significantly needed to the rescue.

One could purport that the central theme in this movie is gender justice, in that gender equity is a conduit for promoting gender equality. This was achieved in the roles that were played by the actors in the movie; with women assuming male-dominated roles such as the President of the United States of America, Treasury Secretary, Tech Expert, Head of International Monetary Fund, and high intelligence Covert Agent. This did not only challenge negative narratives about women capacities but also reinforced the consciousness that women will deliver on any job no matter what it is. This was further buttressed by the role the woman who initiated the plan to take over the G20 summit depicted.

Additionally, the roles portrayed by men in the movie were a pointer to the fact that women empowerment can only be accelerated in exponential measures by the quality of support received by men. Gender justice is not a battle of the sexes, it is an opportunity for partnerships across board towards the ultimate achievement of social justice. It is partnerships that render all other SDGs including Gender Justice attainable in practice.

Economic justice, climate justice, and policy advocacy were interdependently demonstrated through β€˜the Together plan’, which was an incorporation of sustainable agriculture and digital currency integration for sub-Saharan/underdeveloped communities; a plan (policy) viable in addressing especially SDGs 1,2,12, and 13.

This movie is all-inclusive, as it impresses upon the concept of family, humanitarianism, love, care and compassion; virtues that are always at the center of social justice advocacy and activism. Viola, through the G20 movie, as did her other movies has again notably furnished the conversation and action towards promoting women and social justice. Art and Entertainment remains a strategic tool to use in promoting social justice.

#G20 is more than just a movie, it is a message to posterity that as women, β€˜π’ƒπ’†π’Šπ’π’ˆ π’”π’•π’“π’π’π’ˆ π’ˆπ’π’• 𝒖𝒔 π’‰π’†π’“π’†β€¦π’˜π’† 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒐𝒅 π’Šπ’ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π’”π’‚π’Žπ’† π’…π’‚π’“π’Œ 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 π’˜π’† 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 π’π’Šπ’‡π’†, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 π’”π’†π’“π’—π’Šπ’„π’† 𝒕𝒐 π’‰π’–π’Žπ’‚π’π’Šπ’•π’š.
